EUSR Abrasive wheels (petrol driven cut off saws & Floor saws)

About the scheme

This endorsed training scheme has been designed by Utility Safety Solutions and is for those operatives that are required to use a range of petrol driven cutting equipment.

On completion of the course delegates will understand the health and safety arrangements associated with petrol driven cut off equipment and their roles and responsibilities in the safe operation of petrol driven cut off equipment.

Our 1-day abrasive wheels training courses are split into two sections, theory and practical. For training quality purposes, we shall only take a maximum of 8 delegates per course

Knowledge Criteria

K1 – Your responsibilities regarding health, safety, and the environment whilst at work including safe systems of work associated with HSG 47, HSG 17, dust control, face fit testing and HAVS at work

K2 – Your roles and responsibilities relating to the use of portable cutting and grinding equipment

K3 – The range and use of PPE to the use of portable cutting and grinding equipment

K4 – The specific requirements for the use of EACH of the categories to be taken:

a) Petrol Driven Equipment – including fuel types, starting procedures, safe transportation, and storage of fuel
b) Electric/Battery Operated Equipment – including inspection of equipment and leads, electrical certification and setting up procedures
c) Hydraulic Driven Equipment – including inspection of hoses, hose connection/disconnection and setting up procedures
d) Pneumatic Driven Equipment – including inspection of air hoses, hose connection/disconnection and setting up procedures

K5 – The correct type of portable cutting and grinding wheels, methods of marking abrasive wheels with their type, size, and maximum operating speed

K6 – The methods of cutting/grinding relevant to the piece of equipment being used

K7 – The environmental and health hazards and risks arising from the use of abrasive wheels and the precautions to be observed

K8 – How to store, handle and transport abrasive wheels

K9 – How to inspect and carry out pre-use checks to identify any damage to the abrasive wheel

K10 – The functions of components used with abrasive wheels including flanges, blotter and bushes and nuts

K11 – How to maintain good housekeeping of the site

K12 – The consequences of not following working practices, relevant to activity

Performance criteria

P1 – Determine the work location using relevant documentation and work instructions

P2 – Determine the content and sequence of tasks needed to complete the work activity

P3 – Plan to carry out work in line with relevant policy and work procedures

P4  – Review or carry out a site-specific risk assessment in accordance with relevant procedures

P5 – Follow the required control measures e.g. safe systems of work, to maintain a safe working environment during work operations

P6 – Select and wear required PPE and RPE to complete work activities in accordance with safe systems of work

P7 – Prepare the material to be worked on in accordance with work instructions and Company procedures

P8 – Inspect and prepare the portable cutting and grinding equipment and accessories to be used in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions for EACH of the categories to be taken:

a) Petrol Driven Equipment
b) Electric/Battery Operated Equipment
c) Hydraulic Driven Equipment
d) Pneumatic Driven Equipment

P9 – Inspect the abrasive wheel to be used is suitable for the material to be cut and compatible with the machine on which it will be used

P10 – Mount the abrasive wheel onto the machine and adjust the guard in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions

P11 – Demonstrate pre-use checks, including start and stop procedures

P12 – Start the portable equipment and carry out running checks

P13 – Use the portable equipment to cut/grind safely

P14 – Stop portable equipment safely and remove abrasive wheel

P15 – Store and transport portable equipment and abrasive wheel safely

P16 – Dispose of waste materials using correct procedures

P17 – Leave the work area in a safe and appropriate condition
